One of the most important element of chemistry is Carbon....Here is five interesting facts about it.

  • Atomic number: 6 Element Symbol: C


  • Elemental carbon can take form of most hardest substance (diamond) and most softest substance (graphite).


  • Carbon is the basis of organic chemistry as it occurs in all living organism. The simplest organic molecules consist of carbon chemically bonded to hydrogen.


  • Carbon usually has a balance of +4, which means it can create covalent bond with 4 other atoms. +2 oxidation state is also seen in compounds such as carbon monoxide.


  • One of the most important uses of carbon is carbon dating. It is used to measure ages of things.Scientists use a rare form of carbon called C-14 to measure ages of fossils, bones etc.


  • Carbon is used in nanotechnology such as carbon nano tube(CNT). they are typically referred as single walled nanotubes and multi layered nanotubes. They have properties like electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, elastic strength and expansion.
